Rules for Pieces and Movement
All pieces follow normal movement rules except for the following changes
- Boulders impede movement as if an allied piece. Knights may leap over boulders.
- Pawn special notes
- Pieces have memory of themselves, so if pawn has not moved itself, it still can do a +2 movement even after disotrtion event
- En passant will works overall: enemy pawn moves 2, the immediate following turn you may en passant if able
- Promotions may trigger after distortion; can trigger multiple promotions and enemy promotions.
- Promotion condition: pawn reaches opposing end rank, that rank must fall in the last three tiles of the overall board
- Castling special notes
As a special twist, castling works vertically and horizontally as long as "normal" castle conditions are met, which are...
- King has yet to move. Castling rook has yet to move. Disortions do not count as movement
- There must be a 2 or 3 tile gap between king and castling rook.
- King tiles from start to destination (inclusive) should not be threatened and not be a void/gap
- If all conditions are met, king will move to destination, and castling rook will move on opposite side from the movement to the immediate next tile
Distortions and empty space
Distortion Events impact the larger tiles (megatiles/islands) in some way
At the end of every third turn, the player that took that turn will draw a card and follow instructions on the card.
- A player may not put self in check from a distortion, but may use it to check an opponent. This includes potential promotions
- Swap: Swaps two adjacent megatiles. You may not select the tile with an opponent's king
- Rotate: Rotate any megatile 90 degrees clockwise or counter-clockwise
- Slide: Move a megatile horizontally or vertically. Up to two additional tiles may be pushed with this movement.
- Slide requires all megatiles to remain on the overal blue board, which is considered empty space
- Void: Pick a megatile without a king. It is removed from the board until the next card is drawn
- Note: For that duration, the place where that tile was is considered empty space
With distortions, it is possible that pieces might encounter empty space in their move path
- Gaps of empty space stop normal movement with the following exceptions:
- Queens retain full movement over gaps.
- Knights can leap over gaps as normal.
- Pawns may use their 2-square first movement to leap a gap.
